In addition to being an acupuncturist, I am a nurse practitioner, specializing in women's health and earned my doctorate in nursing practice. I believe that there is definitely a way to combine Western medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine to provide evidence-informed care that provides optimal outcomes.
I’m often asked why I became an acupuncturist, and I think that it’s important that I share my story...
Many moons ago, when I was in nursing school, I injured my back. I don’t know what I did to it, only that I was practically immobile, and nothing seemed to help. I tried traditional medicine, medications, chiropractors, and physical therapy...all with little improvement. As I was about to give up hope of having a fully functional back, a friend from nursing school suggested I try acupuncture...and I laughed!
I laughed because I never thought acupuncture could help when Western medicine was not successful. But I figured I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a chance...
My acupuncturist planned an intense treatment that included acupuncture, electro-stimulation, cupping, and heat application. After a 6-week regimen, my back pain was completely GONE, a 0/10 on the pain scale - I felt amazing!
It’s been over 20 years since that episode of severe back pain. Since then, I’ve had limited issues with back pain thanks to acupuncture treatments.
